Lake District

The Lake District

One of the finest locations for photographers, the ‘Lakes’ are so photogenic it is a fabulous place for landscape photographers to immerse themselves in.

Once considered unattractive the whole area is now regarded as one of the most beautiful locations in the UK. There are many great shots to be had here and we will be looking specifically for well lit shots that reflect the elegance and charm of the district. From sunken boats, trees reflecting in water and cloud covered hills there is a fabulous scene around every corner. The weather is moody here and its possible a warm sunny day can quickly turn to dark and foreboding wind and rain.

The majority of our time here will be on foot with the use of a vehicle to get us to some of the prime locations. This trail includes a number of talks and lessons on the how to of landscape photography. This includes talks on composition, technical aspects of camera settings, exposure and editing selects.

The group size is limited to 6 for this trail which allows time for individual and group instruction and help. The goal is to help participants to gain increased knowledge and confidence to create stunning landscape photographs.

All meals, accommodation and transport included.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Keswick by 5pm.

Arrive at Keswick in the afternoon and we’ll get settled in to our comfortable hotel which will be our base. Over dinner we’ll run over the itinerary for the next few days and draw up an outlined shoot list. Over dinner there will be a talk on the technical aspects of camera settings.

Day 2: Early start for shooting the drama of morning light.
An early start today as we will be out before dawn. Our first shoot will be to catch sunrise over Derwent Water. Our ideal composition is for some light mist hanging over the water. Later in the morning we will walk around the lake looking for more interesting shots. Over lunch there will be a talk on exposure settings and how to translate the vision for your image into an end result in your camera. We will head out again in the late afternoon to more shooting and putting in to practice some of the principals of varying exposure. Over dinner this evening we’ll review our images from the day with each participant having individual critiques.

Day 3: Another early start to capture a key landscape shot.

We are out again at dawn. As we shoot this morning we will start experimenting with composition and point of view. Depending on the weather we may shoot the same locations as the previous day or move on to other subjects. The light can change quickly and even when the sky is filled dark clouds, rays of sunlight can suddenly burst through illuminating a whole scene. During lunch there will be a talk on composition centred around creating your own vision and style. We will shoot again in the afternoon and then back to the hotel for rest. Again over dinner we will be review our images with a talk on tips with editing and selection.

Day 4: Dawn shoot and workshop on review and editing.

Today we are out again at dawn go and put all of our accumulated knowledge to work with the aim of taking a landscape photo that is in your own vision and style. By mid morning the light will be less attractive so we will head back to the hotel for a review of images and a demonstration on importing images in to Lightroom and setting up a good DAM (digital asset management) workflow. We will also look at selection process and quick edits. After lunch there will be a full review and critique of all our selects. We will wrap up at around 5pm.
